Steve Olson is an Artist, Sculptor, Skateboarder and Humanist living and working in Los Angeles, California. This is the official website.
[From the Skateboarding Hall of Fame] "Credited with introducing skateboarding to punk rock at the dawn of the ’80s along with being the original tester of the Independent Stage 1 truck (released in ’78), and whose iconic Santa Cruz Checkerboard model became the first use of full-board graphics on seven-ply laminated maple, Steve Olson and the scope of his influence over five decades of skateboarding is nearly impossible to overstate and almost equally impossible to summarize.
Olson first stepped on a skateboard in 1966 and went pro in '77. The next year, Olson would win Skateboarder Magazine’s coveted Skateboarder Of The Year award (which he famously accepted dressed in bondage pants, a white blazer, and polka dot tie) and go on to release his game-changing Checkerboard model in 1980. As Stacy Peralta describes it, “He was the first vertical skateboard champion"
[From His Bio] "Steve Olson’s work confronts and undermines the way society constructs and imposes a traditional hierarchy of cultural values and meanings by critiquing contemporary society and our relationship with it. He explores power and the way economic and social forces exert that power by shaping the identities of individuals and culture.
Questioning the nature and extent of our freedom, Olson’s art challenges our acquiescence to authority and conventional thought. Bold imagery, layered texture, deconstructed material and a playful relationship between Art, language and meaning infuses his thoughtful assemblies, paintings and sculptures with a dimension beyond their visual impact."
Collected by individuals, corporations and museums nationally and internationally, Steve's work has been exhibited in Prague, Germany, at the Venice Biennale in Italy, in France and America.
Steve Olson's Sculptures are sought by both Collectors and and Public Institutions. Working in Bronze and mixed materials his work echo's his life and philosophy, infusing an anarchist temperament with cultural memes and social commentary.
Steve is a sought-after collaborator for a wide range of commercial, public and philanthropic projects. Ranging from sculpture and fashion to consumer goods and art therapy, his art as appeared nationally and internationally in setting s ranging from from womens shoes to public parks.
